Trade has been identified as an important resource for financing development. However, we have witnessed the dramatic consequences that unfettered trade liberalization has caused on people living in poverty and especially on women. Economic models which have been implemented since the end of the last millennium have affected, aside from economic and social rights, gender justice, democratic quality and differences in the same way they have generated an imbalance between economic growth and citizens' rights. Worried with the debate around the international trade agenda, from a human rights' and especially from the economic, social and cultural rights perspective, the LAGTN has developed a work plan.

The Latin American Chapter has developed activities through the coordination of the Chapter and by the focal points: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay. LAGTN has committed to the following areas of research, capacity building, advocacy and communications.

LAGTN undertakes diverse regional capacity building activities with women's organizations and social movements around macroeconomics and trade. It also advocates for more transparent negotiations, especially on regional trade agreements.

It has published gender analyses of trade agreements between the EU and Latin America and the WTO and is active in education and mobilization campaigns that engage regional women in civil society actions against unfair trade policies and agreements.

Information on LAGTN resources and organizational structure can be accessed through the side bar menu to the left.
